In support of our Spanish studies, third grade students created a stylized version of traditional Mexican Calaveras, or skeletons which celebrate Dia De Los Muertos.
El Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), a Mexican celebration, is a day to celebrate, remember and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. On this day in Mexico, the streets near the cemeteries are filled with decorations of papel picado , flowers, candy calaveras (skeletons and skulls), and parades.
Our young artists worked through a guided drawing of a skull and then used mixed media including oil pastel, watercolor, tissue paper and fabric to create lively decorations.
The careful work and symmetrical designs make for high-interest and high-contrast compositions. Well done Third Grade!
